Just the simple label Marvel is enough to invoke elation all over the world. From the first “Iron Man” movie in 2009 to the most recent “Black Panther”, every Marvel movie released has received spotlight in the mainstream media, whether it be acclaim or criticism. Despite the criticism, Marvel continues to exceed the bar of expectation set by their worldwide audience with original and innovative creations with each movie. The total audience count in Korea alone for Marvel movies is 84,000 and the world-wide count is immeasurable. Its total box office count exceeds US $14.7 billion, establishing Marvel as the best superhero movie label of all time. Throughout the past 10 years, Marvel Studios has become a multi-billion conglomerate with high profit, acclaim, and fame — producing many hit superhero movies: The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other preeminent superhero series. A unification of these renowned Marvel heroes marks Marvel’s 10th anniversary with the release of its 19th movie— “Avengers: Infinity War”. Like all Marvel movies, this movie has been long anticipated by Marvel fans all over the world. But why has this one been receiving far more anticipation than past Marvel movies? The media and the critics have their diverse opinions, but there are three major elements of “Infinity War” that explains the attention.
1. The final reveal of Thanos
The movie is based on The Avengers uniting to battle their most powerful enemy yet—the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more at risk as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment. The character Thanos has shown brief appearances in numerous Avenger movies, since its first appearance in the “Iron Man”. Marvel has kept Thanos to minimal exposure, leaving fans hanging with unanswered questions, and merely made vague predictions. To have this concealed character finally be brought into spotlight after 10 years, is unquestionably one of the most important points of this movie.
2. The Cast
Another jaw-dropper of the film is its all-star cast. Not only are the original Avengers returning, but other notable Marvel figures, such as SpiderMan (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and the heroes from the Guardians of the Galaxy, are to star in this movie. This a-list cast not only draws immediate attention from the mainstream media, but also guarantees the actors’ phenomenal acting and interpretation of the characters, as most of the actors above have received a great deal of acclaim for playing their Marvel character. In fact, most of them are more recognized as the Marvel character they’ve played than any other role in other movies—like how when you think of Chris Evans Captain America immediately pops into your mind. In previous Marvel movies, characters have appeared in other Marvel movies as cameos, like Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War”. But we would never have imagined to see a full unification of all Marvel superheroes in one single movie. To simply have all these Marvel characters unite to fight a common enemy is a ground-breaking step in Marvel history and a part of “Infinity War” that has been raved by Marvel Fans since the release of the official poster.
3. The full experience of IMAX
Marvel Studios made sure not to disappoint its fans with this film. This movie has been filmed entirely in IMAX, a technique of widescreen cinematography that produces an image approximately ten times larger than that from standard film, allowing each scene to be caught remastering — or DMR — a process which fully transforms every frame of a film to produce the best possible version in a filmmaker’s vision. Normal movies are watched. IMAX movies are experienced. The sound quality and affects are incomparable to normal movies. Every note of the soundtrack and even every scuff of a shoe is clearer in IMAX, with a complete overhaul of each movie’s audio overseen by the film’s director. All of this pristine sound is then pumped into a theatre that has been customized for an optimal experience. Every image of each scene is brought to life by IMAX. The clarity, detail and size makes IMAX more than a movie—it’s a whole different level than howt normal movies are designed. It draws you into something as close to reality as you have ever experienced allowing the audience to be engulfed by the action-packed scenes. This is the first success in filming all scenes of a movie in IMAX in entertainment history. For over 40 years, IMAX cameras have pushed the limits of engineering and are known industry-wide as the best premium filmmaking tools available today. Not only does IMAX maximize the audience’s movie experience, it’s an innovative tool to further develop the movie industry.
“Infinity War” is viewed by many critics as the ‘landmark’ movie to the Avengers series.
Marvel fans hope that this movie will be able to exceed the high expectations the world is holding upon it, and establish its mark as the all-time best hero movie. You can catch the movie on April 24th (Release date in Korea), and say for yourself whether “Infinity War” has lived up to its high expectations, or turns out to simply be a disappointment.
