In his blog post "Are You Happy?" Philip Yancey makes a conclusion that happiness and inner contentment doesn't come from money, fame, or success, contrary to popular belief. Instead, it comes from having a strong purpose and serving and loving other people. I find his article to give strong arguments about the nature of happiness. Indeed, like a cat, it seems to often elude us when we look for it the most and come when we least expect it. He puts an emphasis on the happiness that comes from aiding the less fortunate or spending your time giving back and thinking less about yourself and more about others. I agree with this. Through many service projects I've done in the past, I feel like when I give back to the community is when I find myself most integrated with the community and happy. When I go on service trips, such as YISS GOES or separate trips, I always return with the feeling like I spent my time productively and meaningfully. There is something rewarding about going somewhere and seeing people appreciate your efforts, time, and overall willingness to help them. I remember in YISS GOES Bangkok when we went to Nightlight to play with the children, there was an almost immediate bond between me and a few of the children, and it was wonderful to play with them and know that we brought joy into their lives.
