On February 12, Joaquin Guzman, better known as El Chapo, was found guilty of drug-trafficking among other things. After he was put on trial, it was declared that he was to serve a life sentence for his crimes. It is no surprise, however, that El Chapo is facing a punishment of such degree as he has a bad rap due to his nefarious history.

Born in 1957, El Chapo grew up in a family of farmers. He was first exposed to drug trafficking when he worked in opium poppy fields. After serving under Mexican drug lord Miguel Angel Félix Gallardo, he began his own cartel called the Sinaloa in the late 1980s. The Sinaloa cartel is infamous for its dominance in northwest Mexico. For decades, it made billions trafficking illicit narcotics to the US, Europe, and Asia. As suspicions about El Chapo grew, he was investigated and found guilty for drug trafficking and murder. However, in 2001, he escaped from the Puente Grande maximum security prison and was on the run for 13 years. In 2014, he was captured, only to escape again in 2015. In 2016, he was arrested for escaping from a Mexican prison through a tunnel five months earlier. And in 2017, El Chapo was extradited to the US, where he has been held captive since then.

El Chapo has been accused of being behind the Sinaloa drug cartel for decades. Prosecutors claim that it is the biggest supplier of drugs to the US, and that is how he makes his money. In 2009, El Chapo was in the Forbes’ list of the world’s richest men, ranking at 701 place. He had an estimated net worth of 1 billion dollars from exporting hundreds of tons of cocaine as well as heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the US. Furthermore, he is known for exporting illegal firearms, laundering money, and raping minors. The drug war in Mexico over the past decade has killed around 100,000 people, and El Chapo is largely responsible for it. As his illicit acts are now being investigated more than ever and he is no longer able to escape, it is firm that El Chapo will be put in jail for life. His fraudulent behavior has caused great trouble for decades, and he will now finally pay the price.
