NBA Offseason Winners and Losers

As the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors in game six of the 2019 NBA finals, the off-season started. Teams were able to get players through the 2019 NBA Draft, and NBA Free Agency. Some NBA organizations did a stellar job in improving their teams by recruiting new and elite players, while some failed to sign and draft elite players.

The first winner of the NBA offseason has to be the Brooklyn Nets. This is because, through the NBA Free Agency, they made contracts with top players like ten-time all-star Kevin Durant, six-time all-star Kyrie Irving, and dominant big man Deandre Jordan. These signings have made the Nets instant contenders to win the finals in the future when they get a healthy Kevin Durant back from his Achilles injury. The agency’s awesome potential starting lineup for the 2020-2021 season when Kevin Durant comes back will include Kyrie Irving, Caris Levert, Joe Harris, Kevin Durant, and Deandre Jordan. Coming back off the bench include solid players like Jarrett Allen and Spencer Dinwiddie.

Another team that won the NBA offseason through free agency is the Los Angeles Clippers. The Los Angeles Clippers was prepared to get all NBA second team star Kawhi Leanord even before the off-season period started, by getting rid of players who desired expensive contracts such as Tobias Harris of the Philadelphia Seventy-sixers. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Clippers maintained to keep the sixth man of the year player Lou Williams for eight million dollars for three years. Moreover, they kept defensive star Patrick Beverly for a discount price. Finally, the Clippers are obviously winners for signing Kawhi Leanord and trading for NBA first-team player, Paul George.

The other Los Angeles based team that won the NBA offseason was the Los Angeles Lakers. They managed to pull off a blockbuster trade to receive one of the best NBA players, Anthony Davis, by giving away Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and a group of first-round picks. Not only that, the Lakers solidified its team by signing players like Danny Green, Quink Cook, Avery Bradley, and Demarcus Cousins (who got injured later). This team’s depth and skilled players can get the Lakers far in the NBA playoffs and potentially face its rival, the Los Angeles Clippers, in the playoffs.

A team that won the NBA off-season but is not on the radar is the Golden State Warriors. This is because, through the free agency period, it signed and traded for a young all-star D’Angelo Russell. Also, the Warriors signed Willie Cauley Stein to play the center position and re-assigned young Kevon Looney to a deal. Furthermore, the Warriors re-signed injured Klay Thompson and Draymond Green to a long term deal. This Warriors team can get back to their dynasty form once everyone is fully healthy and back in shape.

The last NBA team that won the off-season has to be the New Orleans Pelicans. It received young players such as Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart through the crazy trade for Anthony Davis. Not only that, it got the potential best players in the NBA Draft in Zion Williamson with the first overall pick and elite shot-blocking center Jaxson Hayes with the eighth overall pick. In the free agency period, it signed a quality big man in Derrick Favors. This New Orleans team is a team to get excited for the future with all of its young assets.

The first loser of the NBA offseason has to be the New York Knicks. This team was supposed to get Zion Williamson, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving all in one off-season. However, the high hopes fell apart when the Knicks lost the NBA lottery and ended up with the third overall pick when they had the worst record. Yikes. Also, in the NBA Free Agency, they did not meet up with Kawhi Leanord who just won the NBA title and Kevin Durant because of his Achilles injury. The worry for Durant’s injury is reasonable but not attempting to sign the best scorer in the NBA with all of the Knicks’ cap space is just absurd. Knicks instead signed Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, and Taj Gibson when they play the same position of power forward for expensive deals. The Knicks will be terrible in this next season.

Another loser of the NBA offseason is the Minnesota Timberwolves. The front office is very strange with their decisions this offseason. They did not get rid of expensive Jeff Teague, sign D’Angelo Russell, or re-sign key player in Derrick Rose. Instead of signing notable players they lost key players like Derrick Rose and Tyus Jones. But at least the Wolves can be excited for newly drafted Jarrett Culver.

The last loser of this wild NBA offseason are the Phoenix Suns. They are so terrible that it is impossible to root for them. First, they traded a very talented forward in T.J Warren for cash in cap space. And, they moved back in the draft by trading for Dario Saric; the Suns could’ve gotten a quality point guard in Coby White, but they decided to move back in the draft and surprisingly select Cameron Johnson who was not even in the talks of being selected in the lottery pick.
