Review of Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil

Last updated:

Earning more than $157.3 million at the box office, Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil is one of the top grossing movies of the year. The film earned $69.4 million in the US and $175.5 internationally. Even with Maleficent being a huge success, Disney has a few more movies soon to be released, such as Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker. If Maleficent 2 keeps growing in profit it will pass its predecessor, and it faces challenges in terms of out grossing Joker which appeal to young adult and adult audiences. However, most feel that the fantasy movie will catch up in later weeks.

Maleficent 2 stars Angelina Jolie as the titular fairy queen. Her character is bold, stubborn, and fearless, staying true to the character’s original depiction in the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty. The actress says the character is relatable to herself and others. Jolie went as far as to dig her fingers in the dirt to get ready for the role. It is said that Jolie received $33 million for her role in the first Maleficent. After sitting through seven plus hours of makeup, costume design and hair people argue she deserves a higher pay.

One of the most remarkable things about Maleficent 2 is the CGI. The colorful portrayal of the landscape, fairies, and other magical creatures is truly breathtaking. It’s by far the highlight of the movie, along with the phenomenally written plot and stellar cast. The mystical, bright feel of the setting makes it a true eye-grabber and never lets go of your attention for even a second.

Why should you spend $13 at the theater to see Maleficent 2 instead of other box office hits such as Joker or ZombieLand 2? For starters, Maleficent 2 is suitable for all ages, and conveys a heartwarming message about family and love. There are a few jump scares and tense moments, but nothing to the effect where it could be classified as “scary.” It’s a perfect movie to watch with your friends and family. If you are a fan of fantasy, action, and romance, then this movie is highly recommended for you.
